Feature film, drama, biopic
Tokyo, the 1990s. Chinese immigrant Lee Xiao Mu survives gangs, heartbreak and betrayal in Asia's most dangerous red-light district to reinvent himself as the larger-than-life Kabukichō Handler. Based on a true story, kind of.
Lee Xiao Mu (Ri Komaki) left China for Japan in 1988 to become a fashion designer. He got by on menial jobs in Kabukichō, then found his niche guiding Chinese-speaking tourists through the district's streets, a business that grew into an empire backed by figures on both sides of the law.
He has since written more than 20 best-selling books in Japan and China, written columns for publications including Newsweek Japan, advised on Jackie Chan's Shinjuku Incident, and run three times for the Shinjuku assembly. His personal life is just as storied: six marriages to four wives, and three children.
